The power plant: DETROIT

SUMMARY:

Conversion, renovation, and addition to a 10,000 SF formerly industrial building that has a 3,000 SF annex and a 7,000 two story building. The annex and the main building are connected by an outdoor ally.

OVERVIEW:

The Power Plant building (named for the civic style brick and design which resembles early 20th century power plants) sits on the Northwestern boundary of Core City Park. It is the final building to be renovated on the block, and will work with the Sawtooth, Pie, and Magnet buildings to fully activate this corridor, and serve as the capstone in bringing this formerly derelict block back to life. Phase 1 of this project renovated the 3,000 SF annex portion of the building into Core City Fitness; this took place May, 2020. Phase 2 of this project begins May 2021, and will add a 3,000 SF second story above the annex, renovate the ground floor of the existing two story building into a retail “bazaar” and turn the entire second story (new and existing) into a corporate HQ for Gunner and Hobbes. The final signature on this renovation will be the conversion of the ally space in between the annex and two story building into a lobby that will serve as a communal kitchen and meeting space for the Gunner/Hobbes teams. This conversion will be a pivotal catalyst for Core City and will invigorate an already active public park and commercial corridor.
